Darq playtime is as long as it has to be! And no, don’t say starting price was too high, it was proportionate to hard work and very high optimization. Darq is essentially centered around few mechanics, in particular the “spinning screen” mechanic so it would be boring to have long playtime. We don’t need long games just to water the wine, we need self-consistent and quality games.

That’s not a defect, that’s a virtue! Dilated playtime of mainstream games is wrong! Wlad put quality at first place and worked hard to develop an highly refined short game. However you can see it is an indie production because of its short playtime. What matters most is the high technical quality of the game: it looks like a triple A platform game, reminding of Inside or Little Nightmaresfor its technical and graphic refinement unfortunately not for the narrative features, but we can not expect so much from the first game of a young developer, interactive narration is a complex task to begin with.īeing a game developed almost by one single person, Darq is really an “heroic” achievement.

Darq was nominated in several games festival and won even a few awards according to Metacritic it was the 42nd most shared PC game in 2019 and it appeared for a long time in “New & Popular”, “Best Selling” and “Recommended” tabs on Steam. There after I appreciated the original “spinning screen” mechanic. I was one of the first fan to upvote Darq on Steam Greenlight in 2016 because attracted by Tim-Burton-like cartoon aesthetics. First of all I was very curious about the life story of Wlad Warhulets, young developer of acclaimed and successful indie game DARQ (2019, Unfold Games). I’m joking but I’m serious at the same time! This is really a precious reading I enjoyed so much. “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Game Development But Were Afraid to Ask!”
